History / Biographical
Alan Pickard was born and raised in New Zealand. He and his wife, Anne, first came to the Bulkley Valley in 1970, working for a few months before moving to work in Kitimat, B.C., for four years. Pickard began researching early settler history of the Bulkley Valley in 1998. He initially focused on the Telkwa High Road and the two telegraph lines that ran along it: the Collins Overland telegraph (1866) and the Yukon telegraph (1900). Pickard’s research methods include seeking out original sources (books, archival records, etc.) and as a result, has collected a number of items including early mining claims, Hudson’s Bay Company and North West Company trading posts, and land surveys in the Bulkley Valley. Pickard’s research is a continuation of other researchers’ work, including local historian Lynn Shervill, author of “Smithers: From Swamp to Village,” and John Tupper Saywell. In broader terms, Pickard’s research interests include telegraph lines, early trails, roads and bridges, first settlers (e.g. Bulkley Valley settlers pre-1914), place names, and maps. In 2005, Pickard and his wife returned to New Zealand, where they currently reside.
